Our Manuka honey carries an MGO 550+ rating. MGO is a scale based on the level of methylglyoxal, the active compound in the honey, and it is the primary substance responsible for Manuka honey’s special properties.
Manuka honey with MGO 550+ is approximately equivalent to UMF 16+ in terms of methylglyoxal content—considered a high and premium grade of Manuka honey.
It is worth noting that organic honey usually does not reach the very high MGO or UMF values found in non-organic honey.
This is because organic practices allow bees to forage in a broader natural environment with more diverse nectar sources. As a result, the flowers are less saturated with pure Manuka nectar compared to intensively managed commercial plantations grown specifically to maximize this compound.
Organic production also does not use stimulants or techniques that push bees to collect nectar from a single type of flower. This preserves the purity and natural quality of the honey, but limits the rise of methylglyoxal concentrations.
This is what makes organic honey a purer and more natural choice, even if its numbers are lower.
